Shakya dynasty is a Suryavanshi Kshatriya dynasty. Suryavansha and Chandravansha are from the beginning of Hindu dharma, approx 5000-6000 years back. Shakya caste traces its lineage from King Ikshvaku, the son of Manu and grandson of Surya. That's why Shakya caste is referred as Suryavanshi in Hindu Puranas ( Vishnu Puran, Bhagavat Puran) Note that Lord Rama also belonged to the same lineag e. Vishnu Purana (Book 4, Chapter 22) lists the names of last kings of Suryavansha Dynasty (also known as Ikshvaku Dynasty). This list mentions · Sanjay’s son as King Shakya (the founder of Shakya Dynasty), · Shakya’s son was King Shuddhodhana Shakya, - Shuddhodhana’s son was prince Siddhartha Shakya. But Siddhartha Shakya left the kingdom and founded a new religion named Buddhism. Siddhartha Shakya was later came to be known as Lord Gautam Buddha.
· Siddhartha’s son was King Rahula Shakya. Since Siddhartha (Lord Gautam Buddha) declined to become the king, hence his son Rahula became the next king of Suryavansha This was one of the reasons why Shakyans were so proud of their superiority and wanted to maintain the purity of their blood. Actually, the caste system that is there in India today was a lot different during around 1500 BC. This was the time of transformation of Vedic culture into Brahminical ideology. In later part of Vedic culture, Kshatriya was the highest varna. Later, when Vedic culture transformed into a more Brahmanical ideology, it was then that Brahmins started claiming higher status than Kshatriyas. According to historian Geoffrey Samuel, the Buddha was born as a Kshatriya, in a moderate Vedic culture at the central Ganges Plain area, where the shramana-traditions developed. This area had a moderate Vedic culture, where the kshatriyas were the highest varna, in contrast to the Brahmanic ideology of Kuru-Panchala, were the Brahmins had become the highest varna. Both the Vedic culture and the shramana tradition contributed to the emergence of the so-called "Hindu-synthesis" around the start of the Common Era. Du Yeuk-gong Princess of Naradhiwas University

Buddha was born to King Shuddhodhana Shakya and hence Buddha belonged to Shakya caste, but Buddha believed in humanism instead of any religion.
Even though most people of Shakya caste did not convert to Buddhism and remained Hindu Kshatriyas, still there is some influence of Buddha's teachings seen in Shakya caste.
In modern times, well-educated city people of Shakya caste are not very particular about caste. They do not consider anyone to be lower than themselves. However, there will always be people from Shakya caste who have come from small towns and villages , and the pride of caste is deep rooted in them.

In Vedic Dharma, the Kshatriyas were divided into two Vanshas - Suryavansha and Chandravansha. The Suryvansha bloodline or genealogy of Shakya caste is decribed in Vishnu Puran, and Srimad Bhagvatam. Shrimad Bhagavatam lists the names of the kings of Suryavansha Dynasty (also known as Ikshvaku Dynasty). These were the decendants of Lord Rama’s bloodline.Srimad Bhagvatam, canto 9 (Descendants of Suryavansha after King Brihadbala)Vrihadbala / Brihadbala. At the beginning of Kali-Yuga Brihadbala was ruling Kosala. He was killed by the Pandava, Abhimanyu.
Brihadrana (Brihatshaya) Urukriya (Urukshaya) VatsaVriddha (Vatsavyooha) Prativyoma (Prativyom) Bhanu Divaka. The Bhavishya Purana states Divakara as the son of Prativyoma.
Sahadeva Brihadasva Bhanuman (Bhanuratha) Pratikasva (Pratitashva) Supratika Marudeva (Merudeva) Sunakshatra Pushkara Antariksha. There is a variation in the Bhavishya Purana as Antariksha is stated to be descended from Sunakshatra as follows: Sunakshatra -> Kinnarashva -> Antariksha.
Sutapa (Suparna) Amitrajit (Amitarajit) Brihadraja (Brihadbhrija) Barhi (Dharmin) Kritanjaya Rananjaya Sanjaya Sakya (Shakya) Suddhoda Shakya. T he Bhavishya Purana states that he was Suddodhana, the father of Gautama Buddha and since Buddha abdicated the throne the lineage continued with his son Rahula.
Langala (Rahula) Shakya
Prasenajit (Prasenjit) Kshudraka (Kshudvaka) Ranaka (Kulaka) Suratha Sumitra.

Destruction Of Shakya Republic / Shakya Kingdom of Kapilavastu Shakya caste was very proud of the superiority of its blood. It is also important to note that originally and upto the time of Vedic Period(1500-500 B.C) the status of Kshatriyas was considered highest. Shakya community considered itself higher than all other people. This will later lead to the end and large scale destruction of the Shakya Republic.King Prasenajit of Kosala wished to marry a Shakya community girl to improve relations with Shakya Republic. But Shakyas, as they considered themselves superior, instead married a slave girl to King Prasenjit. The son of Prasenjit and the slave girl was Virudhaka. When Virudhaka found out that he is the son of a slave girl and that the Shakyas cheated his father, he waged war against Shakya Republic. The entire Shakya Republic was destroyed and Shakyas were killed on a large scale. The remaining Shakyas fled to various parts of South Asia. Once such group of Shakyas changed their name and founded a new kingdom which later became the largest kingdom of Indian history, the Maurya Empire.Source from here
